Local roundup: Groves almost perfect in Raiders’ win over Prexies

Tyler Groves took a perfect game into the fifth inning and Alex VanSickle was 2 for 2 with a three-run homer as undefeated Waynesburg Central pounded host Washington in a Section 4-3A baseball game at Wild Things Park on Monday.

Groves retired all 12 batters he faced in the first four innings but the Prexies’ Tyler Bainder broke up the perfect game and the no-hitter with a single in the fifth. Groves also allowed two walks in the inning but escaped to end the game on the 10-run mercy rule. Groves struck out eight and also had two hits, including a triple, and an RBI.

Jack Stephenson contributed a triple, single and two RBIs for the Raiders (3-0, 7-0) who also got a triple and an RBI from Grant Pack.

William Callan took the loss for the Prexies (0-5, 1-8).

Wednesday, April 2

Carmichaels 4, Jefferson-Morgan 3 – Robbie Wilson-Jones stroked a walk-off, two-run single in the bottom of the 10th inning to give Carmichaels a dramatic Section 1-A baseball victory over visiting Jefferson-Morgan..

The Rockets had taken a 3-2 lead with a run in the top of the 10th.

Ryder Krieg had two hits, three stolen bases and an RBI for the Mikes (3-0, 4-1) and Colin Andrews contributed a single, RBI and stolen base. Wilson-Jones and Parker Hewitt each stole two bases.

Winning pitcher Scottie Maskil came on to record a strikeout to end the 10th inning after Wilson-Jones had surrendered the go-ahead run to J-M. Andrews started on the mound for Carmichaels and allowed two runs on seven hits with one walk and seven strikeouts in 7 â…“ innings.

Jefferson-Morgan starting pitcher Drew Adams gave up two runs on four hits with three walks and five strikeouts in eight innings. After John Woodward tossed a scoreless ninth, Brayden Ellsworth allowed two unearned runs in the bottom of the 10th, including Wilson-Jones’ game-winning hit.

The only scoring before the 10th inning came when the Mikes put up two runs in the fifth and the Rockets plated two in the sixth.

Deakyn Dehoet had two hits, including a double, and two RBIs for J-M (0-3, 1-3) which also got a double and a single from Woodward and two singles from Joe Bair.

Avella 17, Mapletown 6; Avella 11, Mapletown 1 – The Eagles remained unbeaten with a doubleheader sweep of the Maples in Section 1-A play.

Chas Rush homered in the first game for Avella (4-0, 8-0) which also got doubles from Brayden Fuller, Hayden Gatewood and Bryce Wright.

Carson Vanata doubled and Daniel Fox had two RBIs for Mapletown (0-4, 1-6).

Logan Fedak struck out 10 to earn the win and had three RBIs in the second game for the Eagles who also got two RBIs from Wright and a double from Rush.

Fox singled and scored the lone run for Mapletown.

West Greene 13, Sewickley Academy 2 – Darren Knight was 3 for 3 with three RBIs in the Pioneers’ non-section win over Sewickley Academy (0-4).

Xavier Lucey had a triple, single and two RBIs for West Greene (1-5).

Softball

Jefferson-Morgan 10, California 0 – Emilee Bazzoli pitched a shutout with 13 strikeouts and Gabby Marmie was 4 for 4 with a home run, two doubles and three RBIs as the Lady Rockets (3-1) blanked the visiting Lady Trojans in a six-inning, non-section game.

Avery Filby doubled and Kayla Saeli had two hits for California (2-2).

Tuesday, April 1

Waynesburg Central 111, Charleroi 39; Waynesburg Central 142, West Greene 3 – Waynesburg Central beat Charleroi and West Greene in a Section 6-2A boys track and field dual meet.

The Raiders’ Alex Eck earned individual wins in the 800 (2:29.06) and the triple jump (38-1). Other individual winners for Waynesburg were Teagan Crouse in the 100 (11.85), Zack Andrews in the 300 hurdles (42.66), Dalton Jeffers in the 200 (24.61), Caden Fowler in the shot put (38-7), Jeffrey Blair in the discus (112-4) and Jackson Brunell in the pole vault (13-0).

The Raiders swept the relays, winning the 3,200 (Will Maxwell, Mylo Snyder, Braden Walawander and Nate Fox in 9:40.16), 1,600 (Mason Schroyer, Fox, Andrews and Eck in 3:50.42) and 400 (Jeffers, Jack Ricciuti, Andrews and Crouse in 45.63).

Charleroi’s Braddin Lunger was a triple winner, placing first in the 110 high hurdles (15.77), long jump (20-8.5) and high jump (6-0). Other individual winners for the Cougars were Eli Short in the 1,600 (5:48), Nico Fiordigigli in the 3,200 (13:17.97) and Connor Luckock in the javelin (136-0).

Girls track and field

Waynesburg Central 114, Charleroi 29; Waynesburg Central 102, West Greene 28 – The Lady Raiders came out on top against the Lady Cougars and the Lady Pioneers in a 6-2A dual meet.

Reiley Bochna leaped to a trio of victories for Waynesburg, winning the long jump (15-3), triple jump (31-9) and high jump (5-0). The Lady Raiders’ Emily Carder placed first in the shot put 27-9 and discus (72-7) and Madison Blair won the 100 (13.58) and pole vault (8-6).

Other individual winners for Waynesburg were Reiley Shultz in the 1,600 (7:04), Kiley Bledsoe in the 3,200 (17:06) and Jaden Tretnik in the javelin (95-2).

West Greene’s Eryka Hackney won a pair of events, taking first in the 400 (1:07.86) and the 200 (28.37). The Lady Pioneers’ Bethany Courtwright won the 800 (3:14).

Charleroi’s Eden Smith took first in the 300 hurdles (52.93).

Waynesburg won all three relay events, placing first in the 3,200 (Peyton Cowell, Bella Haas, Leah Ayers and Shultz in 14:06.81), 1,600 (Lelia McCollum, Ani Cree, Haas and Ayers in 5:05) and 400 (Blair, McCollum, Carol McLaughlin and Blair Gansor in 54.86).

Monday, March 31

Waynesburg Central 7, Jefferson-Morgan 3 – Gina Tedrow was a triple shy of the cycle and struck out 13 in Waynesburg Central’s non-section softball victory at Jefferson-Morgan.

Tedrow was 3 for 3 with a single, double and home run. She hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning and walked with the bases loaded in the first to force in a run.

She earned the win in the pitching circle after allowing three earned runs on three hits over seven innings. Tedrow walked 10.

Teammate Bre Kerr also hit a two-run blast in the fourth. She doubled and scored in the first.

Ashlynn Snyder singled and drove in two runs for the Lady Rockets (2-1). Teammate Emilee Bazzoli had a base hit and RBI. She started in the circle, and had seven strikeouts and four walks.
