Heather Wakefield of First United Methodist in Brownsville carries the cross as around 15 people gathered at the Brownsville First United Methodist Church to make the nearly 1 mile journey downtown. “I think it’s important to honor the sacrifice and really try to have some understanding of what he went through for us,” Wakefield said on the importance of the ceremonial walk.

Members of the Brownsville Area Ministerial Association gather for a photo at the Brownsville War Memorial on Good Friday.

Members of the Brownsville Area Ministerial Association took turns carrying a wooden cross for about 1 mile on Good Friday, paying deference to the walk that Jesus took to his death.

The event represented the Via Dolorosa, the traditional route in Jerusalem that is believed to be the path Jesus walked on his way to crucifixion.

“It really gives you the emphasis on the sacrifice,” said the Rev. Kristen Emrick of Calvin United Presbyterian Church in Brownsville.
