It is with profound sadness that the family of George Thomas Matty announce that he departed this life Thursday, March 27, 2025, at the age of 84.

He was born June 3, 1940, in Granville, a son of the late George J. and Mary Tyhonas Matty.

George was a devoted husband, father, brother, grandfather and friend, whose life was marked by kindness, hard work and unwavering dedication to his family and community.

George proudly served his country in the United States Navy, serving aboard the U.S.S. Independence and was called to duty in the Bay of Pigs.

Following his military service, George became a skilled home builder, establishing his own business and dedicating himself to the craft of home construction. He took great pride in his work and built many homes throughout the area, leaving a lasting impact on the community he loved.

He was a lifetime member of the California Hill Gun Club, which he designed and helped rebuild, the former owner of the California Boat Club, and a member of the American Legion, former JFK Post 377 in California.

In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by nephew, Steve Matty, Jr.; and his great- nephew, Kyle Niccolai.

George is survived by his beloved wife, Joyce Matty; his cherished son, Craig Matty and daughter-in-law, Victoria Matty; his stepson John Danko and stepdaughter- in-law, Brandi; his loving sisters, Joan Niccolai and Georgette (George) Sapko; his brother, Steve Matty and sister-in-law, Deanna Dawn Matty; and adored granddaughters, Jasmine (fiance, Noah) Danko, MaKayla Dawn Danko, and Makayla Rose Smith (Tyler). He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and many friends. He touched the lives of all who knew him with his warmth, wisdom and gentle spirit.

Family and friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 1, and until 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 2, in the MARISCOTTI FUNERAL HOME, Anthony N. Mariscotti, supervisor, 323 Fourth Street, California, when Prayers of Transfer will be said in the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 a.m. in the Historic Church of St. Peter, Brownsville, with Fr. Efren Ambre as celebrant.

Interment will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Coal Center.

As we remember George, let us hold dear his legacy of love, strength and compassion. He will forever be missed and cherished in our hearts. May he rest in eternal peace.
