Names: Miya Harris, Ayrianna Sumpter

School: Laurel Highlands

Class: Senior

Sport: Basketball

Harris’ week: The Laurel Highlands point guard scored 20 points to reach 1,000 for her career in the Lady Mustangs’ 59-10 victory over Mount Pleasant in Section 3-4A play at Harold “Horse” Taylor Memorial Gymnasium last Monday.

Harris reached the mark on a three-pointer with 5:16 remaining in the third quarter. She was also recognized prior to tip-off as one of Laurel Highlands’ three seniors.

Sumpter’s week: The Lady Mustangs’ forward needed five points for 1,000 in a Section 3-4A game against Ringgold at Harold “Horse” Taylor Memorial Gymnasium on Monday, and she didn’t take long in achieving the feat.

Sumpter made a three-pointer and two free throws for her 1,000th-career point in the first 47 seconds of Laurel Highlands’ 73-25 triumph over the Lady Rams. Sumpter is the 11th player in the history of the Laurel Highlands girls basketball program to score 1,000-career points. Candace John is the all-time leading scorer with 1,735 points.

Sumpter entered last week needing 32 points for 1,000. She had 16 against the Lady Vikings and 11 against Belle Vernon last Thursday before accomplishing the feat against Ringgold.

Hoops stars: Harris and Sumpter have been playing basketball for most of their lives, and each story is unique in the reason they turned their attention to the hardwood.

“My brothers played basketball and they told me to play, so that’s what got me into it,” Sumpter said. “I liked the sport from the beginning, and my brothers really pushed me to do well.”

Harris also played softball when she was younger, but decided to shift her focus solely on basketball as she grew.

“I made that decision, and I am just a basketball player now,” Harris said.

Sumpter played volleyball for the Lady Mustangs, but it was more of a leisure activity.

“I liked volleyball because I was able to have some fun with it and be with friends,” Sumpter said. “It helped to get away from basketball a little bit. I definitely take basketball more seriously. I was kind of recruited to play volleyball because of my height and ability to jump.”

Next level: Harris and Sumpter will continue their academic and basketball careers at the collegiate level next year, as Harris is committed to West Virginia Potomac State and Sumpter to Chestnut Hill College.

Sumpter plans on majoring in business marketing, while Harris is undecided.

Turn it around: Harris and Sumpter have been at the forefront of the Laurel Highlands girls basketball program turning into a WPIAL title contender under the guidance of Stewart Davis, who is in his third season at the helm.

The duo also lauded the play of junior Aierra Jenkins, who adds another presence in the post.

“Coach Stew wanted to do something for LH and help turn the program around,” Sumpter said. “AJ (Jenkins) is another rebounder for me and she helps out down low.”

Harris added, “He (Davis) really pushes you and holds you accountable. AJ adds that presence in the post and helps us space out the floor.”
